Henry’s New Shoes!

Geox Kiwi Canvas shoes have surely stood the test of the toddler! Most weekends the suede everyday shoe has, without fail, stomped around the garden and peddled furiously on a ‘three wheeler trike’ and all thanks to the sturdy sole; not given in… The easy strap on design allows for a quick slip on and removal during the busiest of the Buxton summer (ish) days. Even if the weather has been not so great, the shoe has a waterproof sole designed perfectly for the two year old who absolutely must jump into that puddle at the side of the street!

Here’s an insight to just one of the many things I get up to when I tell my customers & friends that I’m meeting the WiRE (Women in Rural Enterprise) ladies! The above photo was taken a few weeks ago when we met up and walked to Dovedale Stepping Stones. We were replicating (or attempting to anyway) the painting which features on the photo below. The painting was created in June at Beechenhill Farm, Ilam which is where one of our lovely members and inspiring Artist Sue Prince lives. Sue taught us how to use egg tempera paints, in a Swedish Folk Art tradition of Bonad painting. We painted the ladies in their pretty dresses and Sue painted in the wonderful background. We belong to the Dove network of WiRE so the canvas artwork shows the River Dove and the Stepping Stones at Ilam. It was great fun doing both parts to the project and it was great as always spending time with a fab bunch of like minded ladies. As we are all business owners it’s great having a network that you can share ideas with!! The canvas will be on display at Betty’s Sewing Box, Cokayne Ave, Ashbourne very soon. It’s worth mentioning that they also have a lovely, child friendly Tea Room, there’s a shop and a sewing workshop with a wide range of classes!

Bargains at Minibugs’ flash sale

High Peak Parenting

Minibugs, the awesome children’s store in Buxton, has a flash sale until Monday with 25% off all full priced clothes. I can’t resist a bargain so popped into the shop.

I bought these gorgeous Frugi dungarees which are perfect for a crawling baby. We already have a pair in 6-12 months which baby A wears constantly, she looks so cute in them and that makes me happy! They’re soft, easy to put on (and take off with pootastrophies) and have washed really well – no shrinkage or colour loss.

They come in a number of designs, but this was my favourite.

I also sneeked a peak at their discount rail (see Sale section online) and picked up another of the Little Green Radicals’ cotton jumpers. Soft, comfy and on the big side – so they last ages. A cute jumper which keeps baby warm and as its not too…

My day with Theo ~Friday 12th February 2016

Theo pic me n Bert

Better late than never……thought you might be just a teeny bit interested to hear about our trip to the ICC, Birmingham to collect our #SBS (Small business Sunday) award from Theo Paphitis! For those unsure of what it’s all about it’s via Twitter, and it was an idea that Theo came up with. Theo was sat at the kitchen table one Sunday evening chatting to his wife whilst she was cooking dinner. Basically  you tweet Theo on a Sunday evening between 5-7.30pm with a brief description of your business, then on a Monday evening he selects his favourite 6 and re-tweets your tweet! One Small Step was selected back in August 2015 and my other half Mark from Peakcraft was chosen in January so it was a double whammy for us. At the event he explained the reasons why he started the #SBS and I could relate to them all. He said that when you have your own business it can be pretty lonely and pretty hard at times and he felt that if he could find a way to help to promote and lift you and your business by using his profile then that’s what he wanted to do. Boy did he do that! When I found out that my business had won I actually cried with happiness!! I can’t explain how proud I felt about what I’d achieved. Actually receiving recognition for my business from a man whom I think is such a business Guru ~ unbelievable!

The actual event was amazing and really inspiring, there were Q & A sessions with Theo, Mike Pickles owner of Really Useful Boxes and Holly Tucker Co Founder of Not On The High Street. It was great to hear these entrepreneurs talk about their journey and also to hear ideas and hints/tips about helping us with our businesses. I was able to set a business account up with Rymans and receive a £50 credit for being a winner and also chat to DHL regarding worldwide shipping for our shop. We all received a FREE goody bag at the end of the event with all-sorts in there including pens, cupcake cases, notepads & loads more. I was in stationery heaven!  I came home feeling truly inspired and believing as I always do to that nothing is impossible. 🙂

Bogs: brilliant snow boots!

One of our lovely customers happily road tested a potential new brand BOGS…….

High Peak Parenting

Living in the Peaks you need a coat for all weathers, but what to put on children’s feet? We found ourselves always taking wellies AND sturdy boots with us when we went out for the day. Boots are always better for running in and wellies better for splashing in puddles! Was there one brand of footwear out there that could be great for running and give welly protection? The good news, there is!

Nichola at One Small Step asked us (well, E really) to test a new brand she is thinking of stocking – Bogs. E was really excited when we picked them up and loved the cute animal design.

Apparently they are all the rage in America, but not that well known in the UK. At first glance, I have to admit, I was a bit sceptical as they look just like wellies. But after two weeks of…

4th Birthday Celebration

4th birthday party

It’s our 4th Birthday Party Thursday July 16th 4pm-9pm. Wow I can’t believe it’s 4 years since the day we opened, we’ve had highs and we’ve had lows but overall it’s been an amazing journey. The most important and the nicest part for me has been all the lovely families that I’ve met and how supportive people have been. I don’t suppose I realised when I opened just how important the relationship with the children and families would be. Doctors, dentists and health check ups are always promoted and everyone knows the importance of them, whereas foot care can maybe sometimes take  a back seat. It’s so lovely to be able to offer a service where people trust me and have the confidence with fitting their child with properly fitted and quality footwear. I hope you will be able to join us to celebrate, look out for the email/facebook invite. It will also be the start of our huge sale so be prepared to bag a bargain!! We will have a raffle on the night too with all proceeds being donated to Buxton Mountain Rescue.

Our New Display Stand!

Display stand 1

In 2012 and 2013 we exhibited at the local Pavilion Gardens, Buxton at their Saturday Bazaars and they proved to be very successful and a good way to market our business as we were able to chat to families and display a small range of our shoes. We always felt as though our stand didn’t look as professional as we would have liked it to be, most of the stall holders don’t have shops so it’s probably not as important to them to have a branded display stand. In Jan 2015 we started to work on a brand new design for a display stand, it needed to be easy to assemble, be able to display our products well and hopefully when people saw it they would know that it’s One Small Step. So here you have the design and completed stand images. We hope you like it! A massive thank you must go to Peakcraft for their work on this you can follow them on facebook and they also have a website http://www.peakcraft.co.uk.
